Brazil, near São Paulo de Olivença, between Rio Solimões and Rio Iça, Amazonas. Restricted by P. Hershkovitz in 1977 to near São Paulo de Olivença but to the south of the Rio Solimões.

previously included S. cruzlimai, S. illigeri, S. weddelli, S. nigrifrons, S. lagonotus, S. leucogenys, and S. fuscus; recently moved from Saguinus to Leontocebus, however, some recent publications have suggested retaining all species traditionally contained in Saguinus under distinct subgenera (Saguinus, Leontocebus, Tamarinus, and Oedipomidas) rather than genera, which is tentatively followed here pending further discussion
