split from S. vulgaris based on morphology and genetic data; under a new proposed taxonomic arrangement for Sciurini, S. meridionalis (along with S. vulgaris, S. anomalus, and S. lis) would be the only representatives of the genus Sciurus; this arrangement is tentatively not followed here pending further investigation
