Taxonomy notes
the name syriacus, previously a synonym of Microtus socialis, has been shown to represent this species and is the oldest available name for the species; however, the name nivalis is used here until further notice, as a case has been submitted to the ICZN to use its plenary power to protect nivalis as changing the name will cause nomenclatural instability
