Taxonomy notes
previously included P. gambelii, P. labecula, and P. sonoriensis and includes the name arcticus, which has been falsely applied to an undescribed species from the Yukon despite it's type locality being from well outside the distribution of that population; the taxonomic status of P. maniculatus and the species split from it is very tentative and further research is needed to confirm the species status of P. gambelii, P. labecula, P. sonoriensis, and the undescribed form in the Yukon
