Type locality

type locality is based on syntypes from three localities: two in Ecuador, "La Coca, Río Napo" and "Humuyacu, Río Napo" nearby, and one at Tarapoto in Peru, a tributary of the left bank of the Napo. Restricted by P. Hershkovitz in 1977 to the right bank of the Napo.

split from S. fuscicollis; recently moved from Saguinus to Leontocebus, however, some recent publications have suggested retaining all species traditionally contained in Saguinus under distinct subgenera (Saguinus, Leontocebus, Tamarinus, and Oedipomidas) rather than genera, which is tentatively followed here pending further discussion
