Taxonomy notes

split from S. fuscicollis and includes melanoleucus; spelling changed from 'weddelli' to 'weddellii' to match the original description; recently moved from Saguinus to Leontocebus, however, some recent publications have suggested retaining all species traditionally contained in Saguinus under distinct subgenera (Saguinus, Leontocebus, Tamarinus, and Oedipomidas) rather than genera, which is tentatively followed here pending further discussion
