the Italian (aspromontis) and Iranian (pictus) endemic subspecies may be distinct species based on limited molecular and morphological studies, but further studies incorporating material from the entire range of D. nitedula are needed before the taxa are elevated to species status; includes the name yarkandensis until it is described officially, as it is currently unavailable
