Taxonomy notes
Zou et al. 2026 recently suggested to elevate hainanus to species status based on cytochrome b and three nuclear genes, however, the publication does not make it clear what populations should be included under this putative species and there is mito-nuclear discordance in the relationships between Hainan, mainland Southeast Asian, and Taiwan populations that may be associated with this species; given this uncertainty, hainanus is retained under T. maritimus here
