Taxonomy notes
includes venustulus, which was recently considered a distinct species; Microsciurus, Syntheosciurus, and Sciurus were recently tentatively revised, in which species of Microsciurus were moved to other genera; M. alfari would be the only species retained under Microsciurus, along with an undescribed species; this arrangement is tentatively not followed here pending further investigation
