under a new proposed taxonomic arrangement for Sciurini, S. yucatanensis (along with S. colliaei, S. deppei, S. aureogaster, and S. variegatoides) would be moved to the genus Echinosciurus; this arrangement is tentatively not followed here pending further investigation
