split from M. mimulus; Microsciurus, Syntheosciurus, and Sciurus were recently tentatively revised, in which species of Microsciurus were moved to other genera; M. boquetensis would be moved to the genus Leptosciurus; this arrangement is tentatively not followed here pending further investigation
