split from M. flaviventer; Microsciurus, Syntheosciurus, and Sciurus were recently tentatively revised, in which species of Microsciurus were moved to other genera; M. simonsi would likely be moved to Leptosciurus, although molecular data has not been included for this species at this point; this arrangement is tentatively not followed here pending further investigation
