Taxonomy notes

Split from H. brasiliensis. The name vulpinus has been recognized as a distinct species (under two distinct concepts, one leading to a monophyletic relationship with brasiliensis [D'Elía et al., 2015], and the other leading to a paraphyletic relationship [Gonçalves et al., 2015]), but molecular work by Prado et al. (2021) led to the suggestion that the two should be considered conspecific. More recently, morphometric work by Torres et al. (2025) provided support for treating the two taxa as distinct.
